Forschungstelle für Deutsches und Europäisches Lebensmittelrecht Research Centre for German and European Food Law

The Research Centre for German and European Food Law was founded as an initiative of the „Arbeitskreis der Bayerischen Ernährungswirtschaft (ABEW)“ supported by the Bavarian State Government at the beginning of 1990. The Research Centre belongs to the Faculty of Law, Business and Economics at the University of Bayreuth.

The Research Centre focusses on the scientific treatment of Food Law in a intradisciplinary way. Food Law is not only subject to Public Law. It has, in addition, points of contact to the fields of, for example, Competition Law or Civil Law.

The international approach of the Research Centre is based on the European prescriptions that dominate the legislation with respect to the Food Law in the Member States. In recent years these European prescriptions reorganized Food Law. Furthermore, European norms are constantly in a state of change. At the same time, social expectations toward Food Law are increasing. To meet a high level of consumer protection, as well as the requirements of the food industry, it is necessary to advance the legal doctrine of Food-Law-regulation.

The interdisciplinary specifics of Food Law additionally demand expert knowledge of the natural sciences, as well as the humanities. For this reason the Research Centre cooperates with various institutes from the sciences, economy, justice, administration and politics.

The research work is supported by the „Verein zur Förderung der Forschungsstelle für Deutsches und Europäisches Lebensmittelrecht an der Universität Bayreuth e.V.“ which is an incorporated society with the objective of promoting the Research Centre for German and European Food Law.
